LAYOFF OR COMPANY CLOSURE

If you have received notice that your employment will be terminated or you have already lost your job due to layoff, we can offer you many resources to get you back to work. The Milwaukee Area Workforce Investment Board administers and coordinates the Dislocated Worker Services Program as provided by the Workforce Investment Act (WIA). This program takes on a very important role when employers downsize, close or move operations.

Finding employment at a wage comparable to your previous salary can be a challenge. However, being laid off can be a time to redirect your career, increase your employability and enhance your earning potential.

A visit to the HIRE Center is the way to start. This is a specialized Job Center for those workers who are facing layoff from their employer. Staff at this site understand the issues you face as many of them have been laid off at some time in their career, too. This site is operated by a consortium, which includes the Milwaukee Area Workforce Investment Board, State of Wisconsin Job Service, AFL/CIO Labor Education and Training Center, Milwaukee Area Technical College and the United Way of Milwaukee.

We can help you manage the transition to unemployment and start you on the road to your next job. Often workers can choose from education and re-training options in advance of layoff or termination. But it starts with a visit to the HIRE Center.

Displaced Homemakers are another eligible population served by the Dislocated Worker Program at the HIRE Center. A displaced homemaker is an individual who has been providing unpaid services to family members in the home and depending on the income of another family member, but who is no longer supported by that income, is unemployed or underemployed, and is having difficulty in obtaining or upgrading employment.
