STEP-UP STORIES

Charkaris
Since I have been in STEP-UP I have gained many skills that I can use after high school. I have been exposed to volunteer work, Culinary Arts, Early Childhood Care and computers. My coordinator has provided me with so much support and guidance. I have become less shy and more independent. I learned to take the city bus from school to work and then home. Without STEP-UP I would not be where I am today.

I began the program in summer 2002 and have done more than I expected. I have worked with kids in recreation activities, learned computer skills, been a mentor at UWM, volunteered at State Fair and now I work in a professional office setting at my school. The program did not just give me a job that paid well it gave me a job that helped me grow into a better person.

I attended the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point/Milwaukee High School for the Arts PIC Camp. I got exposure to campus life first hand and learned what my schedule would be like if I attended the college. The guitar professor introduced me to a whole new level of guitar and music theory. He gave me the idea that a career in music could really happen for me with dedication and the
right teacher.

The program has helped me a lot though the last four years. I have received help in applying for jobs and other important things that have helped me maintain my current job at Walgreen’s. Through STEP-UP I was able to work at Journey House as an assistant and at the Milwaukee People with Disabilities as a Recreation Aide. They helped me search for the right college and learn about the Police Aide program. STEP-UP coordinators have been mentors
to me.

STEP-UP Coordinators work at area high schools. If your school does not have one, call the coordinator at a school in your neighborhood to learn more.
