The time to think about looking for a summer job is long before you break out the shorts and flip-flops.

Determine the summer job you want - the type of job, the location, the hours, the pay. You may not be able to find a job that meets all your needs, but you should try to find one that meets as many as possible.

Take a look at what you have to offer. Even if this will be your first job, you do have something to offer.
- What kind of skills do you have? For example, you may be great on computers and want to work in
an office.
- What kind of work have you done either for pay or as a volunteer?
- Is there something you are studying in school that might be useful to an employer?

Develop a resume. You will put forth a very professional image if you present a professional-looking resume to potential employers. Stop in the Milwaukee Career Center

Talk to everyone you know and ask if they have any contacts that can lead to a summer job. Your parents, family members, your teachers and other adults you know from church or other places can all help. Give them a copy of
your resume. This is networking and it is the best way to
land a job. |

Read the paper and look for jobs on the Internet. Stop in the Milwaukee Career Center for job listings and other resources. |

Hit the pavement, stopping in at places you would like to try for a job with your resume in hand. You won’t get an interview on the spot but you can get a quick look at the company. Make sure you are familiar with job applications because many will suggest that you fill out an application while you are there. Be sure to dress right! |

The Interview. Make sure you know something about the company before the interview. Think through your answers to common interview questions. The Milwaukee Career Center can help you prepare. Dress right. If not, you lose the opportunity before you answered your first question. Employers want workers who are motivated and have a positive attitude. This is the time to show it! |
